Walks in the Yorkshire Dales

A snowy walk across the flanks of Penhill(High Lane) heading towards West Burton, overlooking the dale and Bolton Castle in the distance. There is also a walk lower down the valley (Langthwaite Lane) which passes a small waterfall and the site of the Knights Templar Preceptory near Swinithwaite.

A walk from Hawes which could involve a stop at The Green Dragon. After having refreshment, you may want to visit Hardraw Force or carry on to a stile, in what looks like someone's back garden, up to Simonstone and eventually back to Hawes via Sedbusk.

Hardraw Force is the highest single drop waterfall in the country.

The Yorkshire Dales is a very popular area for walkers.  The walks range from strenuous fell walking to gentle strolls.  There are a number of walks in West Witton itself, one of which is along the high lane on Penhill and over into West Burton. There are other walks on the lower fells leading to Swinithwaite and the site of the Templars Church. Another walk leads to the river at the bottom of the valley where you can clearly see Bolton Castle in the distance and finally, there is the walk where the famous 'Bartle' of West Witton was said to be taken and burnt.  On fences and walls,  mosaics tell the tale of the Bartle, which makes interesting reading whilst on your walk.  The 'Burning of the Bartle' is a festival held on the last Sunday in August.

A walk across from Aysgarth to Bolton Castle which takes in many of Aysgarth's falls on route. Click to see Map of the Walk

The dales are well known for their waterfalls and Wensleydale is no exception. There are many walks whose journeys start, end or pass the falls along their way.  Nearly every village in Wensleydale from Leyburn to Hawes has a waterfall. There are waterfalls at West Witton/Swinithwaite, Aysgarth, West Burton, Bainbridge, Redmire, Hawes, Gayle and Hardraw, to name but a few, and all within a short distance of one another.

Aysgarth is well known for its many breathtaking falls. There is a gentle walk suitable for children from Aysgarth Falls to Castle Bolton.  (See above)

The falls at West Burton provided the backdrop for a scene in the recent Robin Hood film. These falls provide the starting point for many walks in this area.  Click to see Map of the Walks

You can combine aspects of three separate walks, and walk from Aysgarth Falls, to the Knights Templar at Swinithwaite, through to West Witton, West Burton and finally back to Aysgarth Falls.
